First adopted as the vehicle of choice for Houston%u2019s METRORail, the S70 today provides service on rail transit systems across the United States. With several configurations, the S70 is capable of providing effective service on both high-density streetcar-style systems and grade-separated light rail lines. While similar in appearance to other Charger models, the SC42-DM is designed for commuter operation out of New York City, utilizing third rail electric power in Manhattan, before switching to conventional diesel-electric power once out of the city. Operated by MTA Metro-North Railroad, the SC42-DM is set to become the primary power for locomotive-hauled commuter rail service on all lines east of the Hudson River in the coming years.
